What is the CrossFit Open?

The CrossFit Open is a three-week global competition that allows participants of all fitness levels to complete workouts and submit their scores online. It serves as the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and is a way for athletes to test their fitness and connect with the CrossFit community.

Whether you consider yourself a CrossFit newbie, competitor, enthusiast, fan, or community supporter, the CrossFit Open is for you.

That’s because the Open takes on a special and unique meaning for each person who signs up. For some, the Open brings to life the why behind our daily commitment to CrossFit. Many of us came to CrossFit because we wanted more for our health and fitness, and the Open provides us with a way to stay accountable to this effort. For others, it’s a way to connect and celebrate with other CrossFit athletes within their affiliate and in other cities around the world.

While the workouts get a good effort out of everyone, for many, the motivation to participate comes from the camaraderie and support that wafts through affiliates and the worldwide community during this time of year. The shared suffering reminds us we are part of something much bigger than our individual efforts: We are part of a community that believes in the truth that CrossFit makes us — and the world — better.

How we run it

Here at CrossFit 1926 we like to run the Open each week in a "Friday Night Lights" style format.  Each Friday night during the Open our gym will open for athlete arrival at 4:00pm with the first heat beginning at 4:30pm.  We have a whiteboard located at the front of the gym that will contain heat times for each athlete to sign up for the time they would like to complete their workout.  There are no normal classes on Friday nights and there is no "coaching".  Athletes are welcome to arrive and get warmed up prior to their heat as well as check with coaches and judges to make sure they are clear on the standards for each specific workout.  The heat times vary from week to week, depending on what the workout is.  Part of the magic of the Open is that nobody knows what the workout is until Thursday night each week when they are announced to the world.  Once the workout is announced, athletes have until 8pm the following Monday to complete the workout and submit their scores to the CrossFit Games website.  They are also urged to log their score in our SugarWOD app so they have easy access to it in the future.

In addition to being assigned to a heat, each participant will also have a judge assigned to them.  The judge will be responsible for ensuring the athlete adheres to all standards for the workout as well as validating the final score each week.  In special circumstances, some athletes may be required to record a video of the workout.  The staff and judges of CrossFit 1926 can help make that happen.  Upon completion of the workout, each athlete will be given a slip of paper with their score on it.  Athletes are urged to immediately upload their score as instructed to avoid missing score submission deadlines.

The final week of the Open here at CrossFit 1926 is typically a special week.  We like to wrap up our Open season with an awards ceremony, some food, and a bunch of fellowship.  We like to encourage all athletes to come to each Friday Night of the Open and to bring their family and friends.  The final week is one they surely won't want to miss!

Redos

In the event the athlete wishes to redo their Open workout in the days following their initial attempt, it is that athlete's responsibility to find their own judge and coordinate a time to redo their workout without interfering with regularly scheduled classes.  The athlete may then withdraw their initial score and upload the new score if desired.  We discourage athletes from simply showing up to the gym to redo their workouts without first finding a judge to run them through their second attempt.
